Is GEO Just SEO? Where They Overlap and What's Genuinely New

How Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) overlaps with traditional SEO, what is genuinely different, and why you can't rely on SEO habits alone.

'I haven't even mastered SEO, now there's GEO?' is a common first reaction. But GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is not another inflated buzzword — it's the inevitable new playbook as search traffic authority shifts structurally to AI engines.

The overlap: SEO basics still matter. A clear site structure, semantic pages, genuine useful content, fast loading, and indexability are foundations every engine needs. So doing GEO doesn't mean abandoning SEO — SEO becomes GEO's foundation.

What's genuinely new has a few parts. First, GEO requires content AI engines can 'understand', not just 'match' — structured data, fact bases, and clear Q&A structures exist so AI understands who you are. Second, GEO weights third-party authority credibility more heavily; AI engines prefer to cite sources they deem trustworthy. Third, GEO is continuous monitoring work, because AI citation mechanisms are far more dynamic than traditional search.

The bottom line: GEO and SEO are not either/or but an upgrade. Have your SEO foundation, but to be seen in AI search you must understand and apply GEO's new logic. A competent GEO optimization company designs from the AI engine's citation perspective — not just SEO repackaged.
